Is crime out of control in South Africa?

The latest crime statistics announced by Police Minister Bheki Cele, show an alarming rise in the murder rate with a staggering amount of people being murdered in the past three months alone.

Minister Cele revealed that in the period from April 1 to June 30th 2021, 30 5 760 people were murdered in South Africa which is a 66.2 % increase in the country’s murder rate, a statistic that has left many of our political parties worried. It was also revealed that 10 000 women were raped during the same period.

According to the crime figures a total of 1 385 murders occurred at the home of the victim or of the perpetrator while 206 of the murders occurred at places where liquor is sold.

Liquor outlets were the fourth most likely place to be killed in South Africa.

The four primary factors leading to these murders were arguments, robberies, mob justice incidents and gang-related killings.

Zandile Majozi, the IFP MP and its spokesperson on police, said that the increase in violent and contact crimes, together with the attacks on private property, vehicles, businesses, and individuals, was proof that the country’s police service was unable to keep South Africans safe.

“Contact crimes, such as murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, and all categories of assault, registered a 60.6% increase and these shocking numbers reflect a SAPS management in complete disarray, with police officers executing orders that have no real impact on the daily lives of our people.”
